Nussmeier interviewing with Southern Miss?

Offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is the latest Alabama assistant to jump into this holiday season's coaching carousel. The Hattiesburg American is reporting that Nussmeier will interview for the head coaching job at Southern Miss this week.

The holiday season is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, right? Well in college football, it's one of the most stressful as it's typically a period of hirings, firings and searches in the coaching world.

Earlier this week, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was one of two candidates up for the Auburn head coaching position. The Tigers ended up hiring Gus Malzahn, a former AU assistant, instead.

The latest Alabama assistant to be linked to another school is offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. The Hattiesburg American is reporting that he is expected to interview for their open head coaching job this week, along with other offensive coordinators like North Carolina's Blake Anderson, Texas Tech's Neal Brown and Oklahoma State's Todd Monken.

Smart interviewed for the Southern Miss job last year.

Southern Miss recently fired Ellis Johnson. In his first season, the Golden Eagles went 0-12. Malzahn reportedly hired Johnson to be his new defensive coordinator Thursday.

Nussmeier, whose salary for 2012 was $590,000, spent three years as the offensive coordinator at Washington before replacing Jim McElwain, who left Alabama to become the head coach at Colorado State, in February.

Under Nussmeier, Alabama ranks 40th in the nation (fourth in the SEC) in total offense, averaging 439.08 yards per game. The Crimson Tide has been balanced all year, averaging 224.62 yards rushing and 214.46 yards passing per game.

When asked about his assistants interviewing for other jobs, Alabama head coach Nick Saban said last week that he wants all his coaches to "fulfill the goals and aspirations they have."
