The new Owls are working hard, the old Owls are working harder, and the coaches building one heck of a solid recruiting class.

I'm going to mention Operation Sellout here because I think it's really an important campaign this year. The bottom line is game attendance needs to be a priority for fans this season. The football players and coaches are working extremely hard to put a championship team on the field. It's up to us to put our behinds in the seats. Nothing makes the game day experience more exciting than a "packed house".

Attendance is also very important not only to our players on the field - but to visiting recruits. Get to the game - and bring 20 friends.

You've all asked about summer workouts and the new freshmen. I got a call from one of them this week - John Gioffre from Cinco Ranch. I asked him a little about summer workouts and he said they were "tougher than he could have ever imagined." He said the warmups alone were "a killer". But he also said everyone is in great shape and that all the freshmen have started to turn the corner a little bit on the workouts - going from "survival" to making good strides. He said he's currently around 295 and so is freshman Defensive Tackle Mike Smith.

Rice will host its last Mini Camp of the summer next Thursday July 17th at Rice Stadium. The Owls are expecting a big group and are eagerly awaiting the attendance and participation of some prime targets.

In belated fashion, we welcome new Assistant Athletics Director for Football Operations Jerry Pickle to the staff. Pickle has over 20 years experience in football operations, including the last 13 at Baylor.

Welcome Jerry, wife Julie, and sons Matthew and Jonathan to the Rice family.
