While Rice was opening its season with an exciting 56-27 win over SMU Friday night, several future Owls were taking care of their own business. From the performances below looks like the future may get even brighter on South Main.
Cody Bauer - DE/OL, Pottsboro
Pottsboro 34
Henrietta 17
Cody had a very nice game defensively - 10 tackles and 2 sacks. He also played on the Offensive Line but didn't have his "grade out" when we spoke. He is 6-4 235 at present.
Andre Brackens - RB/CB, Dallas Parish Episcopal
Dallas Parish Episcopal 50
Episcopal School of Dallas 27
Andre rushed for 119 yards on 11 carries, including a 27 yard touchdown run. On defense, he had an interception and 3 tackles.
Trey Briggs -LB, Jersey Village
Deer Park 10
Jersey Village 7
Briggs had 8 tackles, 1 for a loss in JV's last second loss to the Deer. Deer Park connected on a field goal as the game ended.
Alex Francis - CB, FB Hightower
FB Hightower 35
Aldine Eisenhower 21
Though Eisenhower possesses one of the biggest receiving tandems in the state this year in 6-3 Greg Timmons (UT commit) and also 6-3 Jaz Reynolds (OU commit), and also highly regarded QB Kenneth Guiton; the 'Canes came out on top Friday night. Alex Francis had 3 pass break ups and a fumble recovery. He also added 4 tackles. Francis showed no signs of a hamstring injury that bothered him all summer going up against the much taller Timmons and Reynolds. Francis yielded one score to Timmons when he slipped on a post route. Rice recruit Jelani Johnson was taken from the field by ambulance with a badly broken forearm. He is expected to have surgery and will be back in 4-6 weeks.
Nic Hammett -LB/TE, Rockdale
Rockdale 39
Llano 33
Hammett had 12 tackles, 8 of them solo. 5 of them were tackles for a loss. Also playing TE, Nic had 4 pancake blocks.
Jon Hodde - OL, Burton
Burton 23
Weimar 21
Burton won this one when Weimar missed a last second field goal. Hodde played both ways and had 6 pancakes, while yielding no sacks. Hodde added that he hasn't given up a sack all two-a-days.
Broderick Jackson - RB/SS, Kirbyville
Kirbyville 36
Diboll 28
Broderick had 15 tackles on defense, 9 solo and 6 assists. He also had an interception that he returned 25 yards to the 1 foot line. On offense he had 33 yards on 5 carries in a limited role.
Jarek Lancaster - QB/LB, Helotes O'Connor
San Antonio Madison 35
Helotes O'Connor 28
Jarek returned to the QB position this year for the O'Connor Panthers, a position he played as a Sophomore. Friday night he and O'Connor took on powerhouse San Antonio Madison. Jarek got off to a great start at QB - going 6-8 for 114 yards throwing, and 3 rushes for 20 yards. THe Panthers had drives of 52 yards, 72 yards, and 78 yards against the powerhouse Madison team. Then some bad luck. He broke his finger on the second play on defense with about 4 and a half minutes left until halftime. In the 2 plays he was in on defense he had 1 sack. He'll be out about 2 weeks with the finger and said his coaches told him he "wouldn't be playing defense again until he gets to Rice.."
Bobby Janisch - OL, Jersey Village
Deer Park 10
Jersey Village 7
The Falcons lost on a last second field goal to visiting Deer Park at the Berry Center. JV Offensive Tackle Bobby Janisch said he had a decent game against the Deer 3-2 front, but since the game was on Saturday night didn't have a grade out yet from the film.
Alex Lowry - NG/OG, Caddo Mills
Caddo Mills 28
Gunter 0
Alex's game is power and his performance showed it Friday night. On defense he had 9 tackles, 4 for a loss. He added 3 quarterback pressures, 1 of which led to an interception. Overall the Fox defense held Gunter to just 83 yards in route to forcing 8 punts. On offense, Lowry dominated. He told me he had 20 pancake blocks (he actually said just about every other play, but modestly didn't want to overestimate the number). He graded out near 100% blocking - Lowry commented, "I actually missed my block on a 33 Roll Down play, but I went out and picked up the Safety after that".
Paul Porras - WR/CB, Scottsdale Saguaro
Paul's season begins Friday against Prescott.
Charles Ross - RB, Schertz Clemens
Schertz Clemens 28
Eagle Pass 0
Charles carried the ball 18 times for 116 yards Friday night as Clemens blanked Eagle Pass. His resulting ypc average was a healthy 6.44 yards.
Cade Shaw - OT, Corpus Christi Calallen
Edcouch-Elsa 14
CC Calallen 7
I'll get Cade's stats as soon as I can reach him. Calallen dropped a tough loss to Edcouch-Elsa 14-7 Friday night.
Josh Skinner - DE/Slot, Silsbee
Houston Davis 38
Silsbee 34
In an opening game loss to Houston Davis, Skinner was everywhere. Josh had 7 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and also blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown. Skinner weighs 240 pounds right now.
Overall, not a bad performance from the 2009 class - way to go guys!
GO OWLS!!!
