Six months to the day that he became a Rice Owl, Jarek Lancaster decided to change that today.
Lancaster called Rice coaches this afternoon and told them he had decided to decommit - opting instead to switch his committment to the Stanford Cardinal.
Jarek hasn't answered calls to his cell, but I got an e-mail from his dad this afternoon confirming that his son had called Rice coaches today.
"Unfortunately Jarek Decommited from Rice today and chose to attend Stanford as a Strong Safety. He had a very hard time making the call, but he spoke to the Rice Coaches today. It was a very hard decision for our son, the hardest yet in his young life."
Lancaster has been recruited to play Strong Safety by the Pac 10 school, essentially the same position he would play at Rice. So the change isn't because Rice is recruiting him for another position.
His decommittment leaves the Owls just over a month to find more Safety prospects in what was already a position of high recruiting priority for Rice in 2009.
We'll have more as details develop. For now we'll wish Jarek the best of luck and respect his decision - though very surprising...
