Based on his response to questions tonight I'd say the Owls made a very good impression on him.
"I really liked everything about the trip. The Engineering program was great and I got to spend a lot of time with acedemic advisors. They were all great and I really liked the small classroom sizes. It's part of the reason why they (Rice) offer one of the best educations in the country."
Newman was also extremely impressed with Coach David Bailiff.
"Coach Bailiff is just a great person and I really liked him. He talked to us about how everyone is a person and treated like they matter. He said his players matter first as individual people, then as student athletes. I really would like to play for a coach like him. He also met with me and my family on Saturday so we could drive back to Alabama early Sunday. Not many coaches would do that."
Overall Newman ranked his trip "an A+ on everything."
"I met a lot of the players. I met a bunch of the Offensive Linemen and I also met Andrew Sendejo. I also met all the other recruits. I got to hang out with Nic Hammett some. We have a lot in common." Newman was hosted by Deep Snapper Brandon Long.
While Newman found everything to his liking at Rice he's not quite ready to pull the trigger on a commit. The Owls appear to be out in front though.
"Rice is definitely my number one school. I'm going to take another visit, probably Wake Forest in January. But I like everything about Rice - especially the coaches. I will probably make my decision in a couple of weeks."
We'll keep you posted on the latest developments as Newman's decision draws closer.
