The Jaguars, who revamped their wide receiver corps in the offseason, are at it again.
They cut
Nate Hughes
after he failed to haul in a touchdown pass on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter of a 31-17 loss to Arizona, and they learned they lost another receiver,
Troy Williamson
, with a torn labrum.
In the offseason, the Jaguars sent
Jerry Porter
,
Matt Jones
and
Reggie Williams
packing and they traded
Dennis Northcutt
to Detroit.
They drafted three wide receivers and signed veteran
Torry Holt
. Williamson, a disappointment last year and in previous seasons with the Vikings, won a starting job in training camp.
And now that they've lost Williamson and Hughes has departed, rookies Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard are likely to make their debuts against the Texans Sunday.
When coach Jack Del Rio was asked if Hughes was cut because of his two drops, he said, "It's a tough business."
This is the second consecutive week the Jaguars cut a player after he performed poorly. Defensive end
James Wyche
was the victim after the first game.
Continuing their youth movement they signed rookie cornerback
William Middleton
off Atlanta's practice squad and signed rookie free agent safety Courtney Greene.
The team also released veteran tight end
Greg Estandia
and safety Michael Desormeaux was waived from the practice squad. They also released first-year linebacker
Justin Roland
.
Greene was a seventh-round pick by Seattle and was waived on Sept. 5. Middleton was a fifth-round pick by the Falcons who was also waived on Sept. 5. He was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay before being waived on Sept. 10. He was resigned to the Falcons' practice squad on Sept. 16.
Estandia was released because Zach Miller, who broke a bone in the back of his kneecap in the first preseason game in Miami, is ready to play again.
